SOUNDSHIFT1 –
SOUNDSHIFT - DETROIT Various - Reshaped & Reformed
A SOLE EXCLUSIVE! Detroit’s new “soundshift” imprint makes a
stunning debut with this intoxicating two-tracker. Opening up is the Soultek
remix of Billy Dalessandro’s smashing “Don’t Sleep” release (which was found in
the many sets of Dan Bell, Ame, Annie Mac & Pete Tong last month) This mix
is nothing short of brilliant and will certainly capture the hearts and sets of
all those Mathew Jonson or Loco Dice fans out there. It has a subtlety that
really creeps up on you and before you know it you’re tapping your feet and
zoning out listening to the intricacies of the music. Truly minimal, there are
loads of space within the track which is somewhat similar to the original but
still a world apart, particularly in the fantastically eerie synth programming.
In the forefront of the song is the shimmering and haunting vocal loop, “Don’t
Sleep” which has an almost hypnotic effect. (Think Richie Hawtin in Closer) The
melody of the title is a delicate affair which sips cocktails in the company of
some nicely chosen whirring and echoing noises. The build is effected so subtly
it verges on melancholy but halfway through a rumbling bassline, appregiated
melody and backbeat hi-hat pattern announce a funkier escalation. It closes off
in a spacey array of emissions, string plucks and sputtering melodies which
demand attention until it’s mesmerizing vocal hook closes.
The second song is a Soultek remix of soundshift’s “Drifting Into View” which
we can only classify as interstellar space funk for lovers of subconscious
techno. It’s hypnotic, daring and well-tempered synthesizer based minimal
arpeggio’s still remain the key ingredient. Overall, this is a beautifully
balanced release with everything feeling nicely placed and well structured.
Something wicked has certainly come our way & it’s name is soundshift….. A
TIP FOR ALL MINIMAL MINDED PEOPLE!

2 (THE SPIRIT OF DANCEMANIA RECORDS LIVES ON!!!)
CHICAGO label that was founded by Ray
(Raymond) Barney in 1985. Label became known for raw, percussive TRACKS from
the very beginning. Early hits included Lil' Louis' 'Video Clash', 'How I Feel'
, 'War Games' , '7 Ways' by Hercules, and perhaps the most known classic, 'Housenation'
by the Housemaster boyz in 1986. Ray's own company; Barney's records
distributed many of the early Chi-labels, like G-strings, Chicago underground,
Warehouse, etc.. In the period of 1992/93 Dance Mania began to release records
from new the breed of Chicago artists, namely from the likes of: DJ Funk, Paul
Johnson, Eric Martin, Traxmen, Parris Mitchell, DJ Deeon, DJ Milton and so
on... Label returned to it's roots, to the dirty side of Disco that was always
very popular in Chicago. Dance Mania released its last
record (#284) in 2001. DJ Funk (who was already producer for the label) bought
it in 2005 and made a new release (#1001). This first new EP, Pop Dat Thang, is
a medley and reprise of DJ Funk old tracks. This one marks #1002, another funked
up mix up of DJ Funk gems, a new release on Chicago’s prolific dancemania label with the King of the sound. This release is
a live mix of DJ Funk goodies which could get any booty party started with it’s
mixed up qualities.

first thing that grasps you is the production level. The drum intro cuts you in

collaboration by South Americans Lexdinamo and Gurtz. The concept behind the Alphahouse
Limited series is simple: if the music is good, release it to the world. No
rules, no preconceived notions, no strict music policies, no release schedules.
It's only another platform for artists to present their work, plain and simple.
Lexdinamo, an enigmatic producer from Córdoba, Agentina, is known for his
highly regarded 2005 release "Buscando Respuestas" on French label
Karat. Gonzalo Uritzberea, aka Gurtz, studied musical composition at University
in Córdoba before moving to Buenos Aires
where he now runs his Natural Media netlabel, a platform for the distribution
of Argentinian and International electronic music and video art. Together,
they've recorded a wonderfully warm, percussive, though-provoking track, "Sakis",
that is perfect for the more subtle moments in your DJ sets. "Like I
Like", by Gurtz, is another warm percussive track that moves forward in a
very relaxed and natural way, enveloping the dancefloor in all of it's beauty. And
finally, Lexdinamo's "Emulacion" rounds out the EP by taking on a bit
more sinister sound, calypso bells ringing in the late hours on the dancefloor

Its quite
refreshing when a new label imprint comes along and the first release
absolutely blows us away. This is a new sub label of Zenit being organised by
none other than Alex Bau. The sound is a refreshing take on techno with the
tracks leaning heavily more towards a modern minimal sound but with still
enough in to pack a serious punch on the dancefloor. The first release is a
breathtaking 2 tracker from Alex Bau himself. The first thing that strikes you
is the level of production with the A side being a driving pulsey techno floor
burner with acidic riffs and a seriously groovy bassline and percussion
pattern. This will surely be hammered by the likes of Richie Hawtin and Marco Carola.
The flip side is a deeper minimal take with outstanding soundscapes and dubbed
out basslines for the after hours set. Simply do not ignore this, it really
works.

Back in the mid
nineties in Sweden a small group of producers in their early ascendancy were
starting to emerge with a new sound that is still influencing techno to this
day. Adam Beyer was one of this group, then 19 and working in the Planet Rhythm
record shop in Sweden and making early records for the label of the same name.
This sound was influenced by the productions of Luke Slater and Jeff Mills but
added a new dynamic and individuality which quickly started to establish a new
fan base. In 1996 after his early successes he quickly seized the opportunity
to start his own imprint - Drumcode which after many pivotal releases has
reached its tenth anniversary. The label output has morphed brilliantly with
the times always being at the cutting edge of harder techno with Adam's
ruthless, uncomprimising approach to quality always apparent making it one of
the most sought after catalogues of the last 10 years. To celebrate this, there
have been a number of extremely successful Drumcode parties this year. This
momentous year also sees the release of this 10 year anniversary album which
has brought key artists that have featured on the label over the years. It's a
dynamic mix of tracks with artists from the first generation of Swedish
producers like Cari Lekebusch and Adam Beyer himself featuring alongside the
newer generation of Swedish talent such as Par Grindvik and Patrick Skoog. What
is also very apparent here is the breathtaking depth in the music itself from
the heavily charged A1 track from Cari Lekebusch to the sinister anthemic vibe
of Samuel L Session on the B1 to the bass driven deep groove of Adam Beyer's
track on the C1 to the breathtaking depth and originality of Par Grindvik's
offering on the D side with its esoteric quality shining through the shuffled
grooves and spacey melodies. This album just reaffirms Drumcode's position as a
real market leader - a brand that is totally synonomous with absolute quality
and forward thinking. This is one of the year's essential purchases!

The long player is a mix of dirty room techno and minimal manipulation. Mood
swings all the while pumping the bass and keeping the energy flow steady. A
twisted attack for the massive.
Bau’s mix of ‘Empty Plate’ is pure prime time. The groove rocks the floor with basshits
and nervous drums. The mix is a greating mixing tool for all styles. Marco
Polo’s mix strips it back to basics. The swingin’ jack rhythms highlight and
the breakdowns peak perfectly. Full on minimal...maybe.

Keno Records David Keno - Liquid
David Keno is an
artist on the up - his releases on the superb i220 label have been causing
quite a stir of late and he is defo one of the producers to watch out for next
year. This is the first release on his own Keno imprint and will not
disappoint. This first two tracker has all of his usual trademarks with its
very German electro influence with the A side building incredibly well with its
tight drums and synth parts heading towards the two third break when the main
sequence hits. The flip side is similar in make up but with a really fresh deep
feel but again packing a real punch.

PRYDA005 - Pryda Eric Prydz - Remember LAST CALL / FEW COPIES LEFT OF THIS
RELEASE!!
Eric Prydz has been
producing seminal, groundbreaking tracks for the last few years now. What is
most astonishing is the fact that here is a producer that can cross genres with
astonishing success having written amazing underground club tracks and chart
hits alike with equal aplomb - a feat that has not been achieved by many dance
producers over the years. As well as his Mouseville label where he records as Cirez
D, he has his Pryda imprint where he records under the artist name - Pryda.
Here we have the brand new Eric 2 tracker under this moniker with the A side -
Remember receiving incredible early support from Pete Tong, Sebastian Ingrosso,
Hernan Catanneo, Funk D Void, Paulo Mojo and John Acquiviva. The track itself
is an epic journey that starts with the vocal refrain and simple drum intro
before the characteristic Prydz driving bass hits you like a sledgehammer. The
track builds into a melody laden monster with its clever breaks, edits and
simple hooklines creating an epic feel. The flip side - Frankfurt is a perfect accompaniment to the A
side. It builds majestically with its neat intro with swirling chords and
melodies - then the pulsing bassline and percussion hit driving the track
onwards and upwards as it keeps adding the layers to great effect. This is yet
another massively accomplished piece of work where both tracks destroy dancefloors
and will surely be another milestone in the Prydz catalogue. Simply huge!!

Misjah has always
brought something decent to the table with a constant supply of quality
releases stretching back over the last 10 years. Now this new 4 tracker on his consistant
Rerun label arrives and again turns a few eyebrows. What we have here is 3
tracks from talented producer Daniel D and a fat DJ misjah remix to boot. The
A1 track cash money immediately grabs your attention with its percussive intro
before the fat bassline and disco type groove hits like a hammer - extremely
reminiscent of material from legends such as Dave Angel and Joey Beltram. The
A2 is a beautiful deep chord driven journey that still packs a wallop. Over on
the flip Misjah does the business with his fat clubby disco tinted remix and
the record finishes nicely with the again melodic track Zuvah. Good stuff!!
